Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
The 122nd Psalm begins with the words 'I was glad,' gladness to be invited and be in the company of those that would together 'go into the house of the LORD.' Isn't that a remarkable proposition? And then to be standing shoulder to shoulder with like-minded individuals, standing within the very gates of Jerusalem? This Jerusalem, the same city that the Lord God placed his Name upon (II Chronicles 6:6), even today stands as a testament to God's promises and faithfulness throughout the millenniums to the nation of Israel, the Jewish people.
As we accept this invitation and stand arm in arm within the congregation, together we can, with joy, 'Pray for the peace (shalom) of Jerusalem.' And then continue asking of the LORD that there may also be shalom and prosperity within the walls and buildings. Do you know something interesting about the city of Jerusalem? It is filled with people. I believe that as we request of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he brings a full measure of shalom (peace) to the 'place,' we should also be asking the same for the 'people.'
The most significant expression of joy in any person's life is when one experiences true shalom. And there is no greater shalom than knowing for certain your position before God himself. Y'shua (Jesus) wept over the city of Jerusalem (Luke 19:41) and also for the people of Israel. He said to the people, 'Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.' (John 14:27)
As we keep Psalm 122 before us, may we remember to present the' Gospel of Christ' in love to the Jewish people, according to Romans 1:16-17, that many would receive and believe in him.
On May 19th, 2010, an illustrated manuscript of Psalm 122 was placed as an advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. 'The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.' (Psalm 68:11). I thank the Lord for the opportunity to join in with one another in our joy before God in so doing.
King David closed Psalm 122 with these words: 'Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.' Let us, together, do likewise.
